This makes for at least the 3rd Saturday night in a row that I'm up doing
Primary Singing Time until midnight.
The house is quiet. The kids are all asleep (and so is James) but
I have coloring and cutting and gluing to do.
Asking me to sacrificing sleep is about the hardest thing you could do.
(I'm not Traci, who does this almost EVERY night.)
But I'm not the victim here. I'm choosing to stay up and do this.
So, why do I procrastinate like this?
I could totally get this done during the week but....NO...
I just can't seem to do it.
I come up with the idea early in the week,
but wait until Sat. night to put it in action.
Do any of you have fond memories of singing time or ideas you've seen done that were fun? I've been doing this since about last September and I'm FRESH out of ideas.
(Remember Milly Kloepfer and the thermometer "sing-o-meter",
and the puppet with the neck that stretched higher and higher as we sang?
Those were some good times...)

in our primary the kids LOVE to play hide the scriptures- one child gets to hide them while one is out in the hall, then when they come in every one sings quietly if they are far from the scriptures and sings louder as they get closer.. that's always fun. Also, last week they opened gifts and each gift represented a song to sing- a teddy bear was LOVE and so we sang love one another, scriptures- scripture power... Oh, and another idea that was fun was she had party steamers cut up so everyone got medium size piece then when we sang we would wave them around- just how the corister was doing it and when we weren't singing we had to hide them. Our singing lady is very creative! Hope that gives you a few ideas!
I have a book of ideas somewhere. Like paddles that have "Boys Sing" "Girls Sing" "Hum" etc, that you switch in the middle of lines, etc. I'll see if I can locate it and pass it along to you.
I have many things done that I should mail to you. A moving ship that gets Nephi closer to the Promised Land as the kids sing, etc.
And from my Preschool Days, I have a tree that you can decorate with pictures for each month, with songs to "choose" for a week's singing time. I'll go looking and see if I can help you out. Mom K
Great ideas, Sarah. I've done something similar with hiding a picture and the kids LOVED it. The streamers idea is cute. We used pencils and candy canes to direct with me, but the streamers can move. Very cool.
Mom, this is definitely a time I wish I had a Deseret Book closer... I ordered one of the helper CD-ROMs and it was good, but the Stake has really discouraged using those for teaching the songs.
(And this week, my color ink cartridge ran out in the middle of printing one of their ideas, so that didn't help! ;)
It's just a challenge to come up with ideas every single week, but it can be a lot of fun.
my sister-in-law does singing time too. i'll talk to her. i just got called as the 2nd counslor in primary so i'll pay special attention.
One day our bishop came in and everytime the kids sang good we cut part of his tie off. You'd have to use a yucky tie but I'm pretty sure the kids liked it especially the boys. Posters with pictures "reminding" them of the song is always good. That's how I learned. I haven't been in primary that long so I'm not that knowledgable.
Oh and by the way, I do the procrastiantion thing every week for my lessson and just about everything else. I'm supposed to talk to the scouts about Nutrition on Wed. Have I made any definite plans? NO!
Here are some ideas from River Mountain Ward:
1. To pick what song to sing, play "human spin the bottle". Get a swivel chair out of the clerks office, and surround it with song titles on the floor. Wherever the child's feet land after being spun is what song you get to sing. Make sure the Sunbeams hold on tight...I've had a few that couldn't resist the g-forces.
2. Put Gatorade in a spray bottle, and lable it something like "Magic Sing". Go around and spray it into their mouths.
3. Walk around with stickers. When you come upon a good singer, put one on their nose/face.
I sometimes peek in on this blog because your little family is really cute...
Another Idea...
Play "Musical Measles". You have the Primary President or counselor sit in a chair at the front of the room. As the kids are singing, you give them a dot sticker for singing well. Then they get to go stick it on the Primary President. The kids really liked this one.
Mind you I'm in Jr primary so I'm not sure what works in Sr.
I am Alisha's sister-in-law and I found your blog from her blog. I hope you don't mind, but I would love to share some ideas with you. I have been the primary chorister in my ward for a year now and I have learned some helpful things. I just joined this Yahoo group called "primusic" and it is a bunch of choristers who come up with ideas and share them. As I am writing you, I am printing a flipchart with words and visual aids for "I'll Follow him in faith." I just downloaded it from the files located in that group and now I have an 18 page flipchart to teach the song tomorrow. BRILLIANT!!! I don't know if you have a Yahoo account but i didn't. I made one up to join the group and have all the messages emailed to my main email. Just go to www.groups.yahoo.com. Then you can search for the group, primusic. It is awesome. I have a ton of info for you if you are interested. Just email me at sarahwright25@cox.net and I can help you if you want.
Hi, I am Alisha's sister-in-law and I wanted to give you some ideas for Primary. I can totally relate to staying up till midnight coloring and cutting. I have found some short cuts that I would love to share with you to make your life easier. I just joined this Yahoo group called "primusic." This was my first experience joining a chat group but I am glad I did. It is a bunch of primary choristers around the country that share their ideas in this group. In fact, I just got done printing out an 18 pg. flipchart for ,"I'll follow him in faith." Voia!!! No cutting coloring or staying up late. I have a ton of more info if you are interested or need help joining the group. (i needed someone to walk me through it.) Please feel free to email me at sarahwright25@cox.net, I would love to share the things I have learned that have made my calling a little easier.
Thank you all for the ideas! Today went great...I think the afternoon church time contributed to my frustrations. The kids are just so much more fresh now!
I'll be in touch with you Sarah(Wright) soon...I've got to try that yahoo group! Kelli...you want to join it to?
I am going to give that information to my chorister. That looks terrific!
LOL!!!
I LOVE Kristen's Tie Idea...dangit, that is awesome!
