Snow, I tolerate. It's cold, and I don't like being cold, but it's beautiful to see the world in white. It's fun to be out in it for a short amount of time, and even more fun to stay inside and be cozy while there's snow outside. I don't even mind shoveling snow. The immediate reward for your effort is gratifying.
But, ice I HATE. Yes, hate is a very strong word, and it is the correct one for me to use here. I do not enjoy chipping ice off of our driveway when it's 25 degrees outside. I don't like trying to drive in it. I do not like how it hangs around for days on end.
Yes, I'm basically throwing a tantrum here. I have been outside since before 9am this morning with my huge bag of salt. My mood started when the darn fertilizer spreader wouldn't work, so I had to use a measuring cup to distribute the salt. Then when I turned to walk down the driveway to put it away, it started to work. Of course.
I began chipping the ice off and found that I had two tree professionals watching me. They were cutting down my neighbor's tree and mostly sat in their nice warm truck and watched me gingerly walk on this huge sheet of ice. Nice. They ended up giving me some tips and laughing as I just about fell a few times. (I did manage to stay on my feet while they were watching.)
School has been out all week. I have been home all week. James has been gone all week. Yes, I can be a crabby Mom.
Okay, I'm feeling a little better. I need to go eat lunch and take a hot bath. My back is killing me from bending over for so many hours.
Ice. Grrrrrrr...

I HATE chipping at ice. SO NOT FUN! They gave us official training on how to do it, weird, right? My approach... call the home teachers/fhe brothers/random other boys and have them take care of it for me... while I supervise.
Good luck with it!
I'd like to hear the "official" way to remove ice. Any new ideas for me are welcome, especially if it cuts the time I spend out there. ;)
I agree wholeheartedly. It is SO dangerous--deadly in its stealth, and hiding where you least expect it. It was ice that caused my broken wrist last winter, and it took away all my confidence. And to add to the mix, children stuck at home not able to play outside is just plain cruel. I'm sorry for you. May the warm winds come soon to remove the ice.
I agree with you 100% and feel your pain. We've already exceeded our annual quota of snow in Boston (regular accumilation being 41" for the year, but this year we're already at something like 51" and the Winter is only half over...it's nuts). And ICE - Ah! That stuff is awful! I had to take a butter-knife and pick-chip the ice from around my car door the other day in order to open it. It was horrible!
So...my advise with the ice is to get this stuff called "ICE MELT" - we bostonites live by it. But the use of salt and sand is still requisite if you don't want to slip.
And HOW RUDE of those guys not to offer to help you. Chivalry is absolutely non-existent this day in age; but then again, with James gone and the fact they seem very strange - you were probably better off that they decided to stay in their truck.
Hope your wintery days get better soon! I can't wait to see you (less than two weeks now)!
sounds like a crummy storm. hope your weekend is better.
And now I feel guilty for wearing a sweater in my 65 degrees!
